NHL Power Rankings: Are the Devils still number one?

The 2025 season is four weeks in, and many teams are starting to right the ship after slow starts. The season is fresh, and team power rankings will see considerable changes during the upcoming months. Early on, Colorado is off to a dazzling start, but the opposite can be said about Calgary. Here are the 2025 Week 5 NHL Team Power Rankings.

32. Calgary Flames

Calgary ranks dead last in the NHL in goals scored per game. It’s been an uphill battle through four weeks. The team is shooting, but the pucks aren’t finding the back of the net.

31. San Jose Sharks

San Jose is young, but their youth is being let down by the team’s goaltending. It doesn’t matter how many goals they score if opponents score more. They must find an answer between the pipes.

30. Minnesota Wild

Minnesota hasn’t started the season the way the organization would have liked. Opposing teams have had their way against the Wild’s goaltenders. Kirill Kaprizov must pick up his play.

29. Boston Bruins

Boston is lucky to be .500. Its goaltending is mediocre and adds more pressure to the offense. This may be another down year for the Bruins.

28. St. Louis Blues

The Blues’ start to the season has come down to goaltending. St. Louis’ goaltending is the worst in the league. A fix is needed, but can a fix be made?

27. New York Islanders

The Islanders are seeing unpredictable goal scoring, but their goaltending has been a letdown. This team isn’t built to make up ground deep into the season. This may be the story of their entire season.

26. Nashville Predators

Nashville can’t score, and they’re adding pressure to the defense. The Predators’ goaltending is adequate but receives no help from the offense. It’s starting to look like a nightmare season.

25. Vancouver Canucks

Vancouver’s goaltending has been mediocre. However, their inability to score goals hinders the team’s success. As the season continues, they must find a way to score goals.

24. Buffalo Sabres

Buffalo is in the middle of the pack in terms of goals scored and goals against. However, the team isn’t far off from seeing more goals against than goals scored. Now is the time to tighten defensive inefficiencies.

23. New York Rangers

The Rangers aren’t scoring, but the goaltending isn’t allowing goals. New York is a team searching for offense. Once they tap into their offensive potential, they will start to rise in the rankings.

22. Ottawa Senators

Ottawa’s goaltending is hindering the team’s success. They are top 10 in scoring, but 30th in goals against per game. The Senators may face uphill battles throughout the season.

21. Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning are another team that sees their goaltending keep them in games. They haven’t scored as many goals as they’d like, but they will pick up the production. It’s still early in the season.

20. Anaheim Ducks

Anaheim’s goaltending is one of the best in the league. Throughout four weeks, the team is ranked 4th in goals against per game. It is hard to expect the team to sustain the goaltending production throughout the season.

19. Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus is a surprise early on. The team is scoring goals and getting adequate goaltending. It remains to be seen how long the Blue Jackets can hang in the playoff race.

18. Los Angeles Kings

Los Angeles is hanging around, but the team has surrendered more goals than it scored. The season is early, but no team wants to drop points. Health will be Los Angeles’ key to a productive season.

17. Florida Panthers

Florida hasn’t found consistency in goal scoring, but its goaltending has kept the team in games. As the season progresses, there will be more goals scored. It is only a matter of time before Matthew Tkachuk returns to the team.

16. Philadelphia Flyers

Philadelphia hasn’t raised eyebrows with goal scoring, but its goaltenders have been tough to score against. However, the ability to score goals is a must. It will be a long season if they cannot find ways to consistently light the lamp.

15. Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto is starting the same way they have in previous seasons. They’re scoring goals while having mediocre goaltending. The team needs its goaltenders to be better than their current rank of 28th.

14. Chicago Blackhawks

Connor Bedard has had a hot start to the season. He’s recorded the first hat track of his career and shows no signs of slowing down. The biggest surprise is the hot play of goaltender Spencer Knight.

13. Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton is where they ought to be, but goaltending is still its achilles heel. Offensively, they are one of the league’s best. If they can find a way to improve defensively, they may finally get over the hump and win the Stanley Cup.

12. Seattle Kraken

Seattle’s goaltending has kept the team in games. The Kraken aren’t scoring at a high clip, and this needs to be corrected. However, solid goaltending will lead to success as the season rolls along.

11. Dallas Stars

Despite three overtime losses, Dallas is having a strong start to the season. The Stars have received strong play from their goaltenders. As the season progresses, the offense will start scoring at will.

10. Washington Capitals

Washington hasn’t found its stride offensively, but they’re keeping opposing teams off the score sheet. For weeks, Washington has been the top-ranked team in goals against per game. The Capitals are ranked 29th in total shots faced.

9. Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina is continuing its hot play. Their goal-scoring rate is among the league’s best. Early on, they have the top shootout save percentage in the league.

8. Utah Mammoth

Utah continues to play well. The offense is top 10 in goals scored per game. However, they need to get better on the penalty kill.

7. Vegas Golden Knights

Vegas is starting exactly how many expected. They’re top 10 in goals scored and goals allowed per game. The Golden Knights will be in the playoff hunt throughout the season.

6. Detroit Red Wings

Detroit has been one of the best stories through four weeks. The offense is lighting the lamp, and the defense has played well. Improved goaltending can lead to a highly productive season.

5. Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh has been steady since the start of the season. They’re scoring goals at will and managing to keep their opponents from scoring. The Penguins have received hot play from their goaltenders through the season’s first four weeks.

4. Montreal Canadiens

Montreal has been as good as any team through four weeks. The Canadiens are scoring the 2nd–most goals per game. They will need their goaltenders to stay consistent as the season progresses.

3. Winnipeg Jets

Winnipeg enters week five with one of the best goals-for/goals-against differentials in the NHL. They are the top-ranked team in goals scored per game. Winnipeg’s goalies are ranked third in goals against per game.

2. New Jersey Devils

New Jersey is an up-and-coming team and has started fast. They continue to score goals while having one of the better penalty-killing units in the league. An uptick in goalie performance will keep the team steady throughout the season.

1. Colorado Avalanche

Colorado is off to a blistering start to the season. The team has been one of the league’s best in goals scored per game. Defensively, the Avalanche have one of the best goals against averages from their goalies.
