NHL Power Rankings – Week 5

The 2025-2026 season is through four weeks. The Colorado Avalanche are the first team to reach 25 points and continue to play well. The two biggest surprises are the Ottawa Senators and the Chicago Blackhawks. Both teams have 19 points in the standings and are off to hot starts. Of the 32 teams, the St. Louis Blues and Calgary Flames are off to the slowest starts to the season. Here are the Week 5 NHL Team Power Rankings.

32. Calgary Flames

Calgary is tied with St. Louis for the worst goal differential in the league. The team is ranked 31st in goals scored per game and 20th in goals against per game. The Flames must find a way to put the puck in the net.

31. St. Louis Blues

The Blues have had a rough start to the season. Opponents are scoring at will, and the team continues to play each period from behind. The biggest issue is St. Louis’ 32nd ranking in goals against per game.

30. Nashville Predators

The season is looking to be a long one for Nashville. Opponents have had their way with the Predators, and this may not stop. Nashville ranks 30th in goals scored per game and 28th in goals allowed per game.

29. Buffalo Sabres

Buffalo is off to another slow start. They are having issues outscoring opponents and have yet to win a game on the road. The team’s goaltending has performed much better than its offensive players.

28. Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus has been on the wrong end of luck. They’ve played many close games, and eventually they will be on the winning side. The team ranks 16th in goals scored per game and 18th in goals allowed per game.

27. Florida Panthers

The back-to-back Stanley Cup champions are anxiously awaiting the return of superstar Matthew Tkachuk. The team is playing well at home, but are struggling on the road. The team ranks 13th in goals against per game and sees its goaltenders give them a chance each night.

26. Washington Capitals

Washington is off to a slow start and had the same issue a season ago. However, last season’s increased power play production saw them surge in the standings. This will once again be the fix to their slow start.

25. Edmonton Oilers

Connor McDavid is ranked 6th in total points, but the team has started the season slowly. Much is attributed to the team ranking 26th in goals against per game. Now is the time for the front office to permanently fix the team’s glaring flaw between the pipes.

24. New York Rangers

The Rangers have been atrocious at home, still searching for their first win on home ice. The team’s struggles stem from its inability to score goals on a consistent basis. Their saving grace has been the league’s 3rd–best ranking in goals against per game.

23. New York Islanders

The Islanders have started the season with a tale of two stories. They score goals and rank 9th in goals scored per game. The team’s downfall is its goaltending. The Islanders’ goaltenders rank 21st in goals against per game.

22. Vancouver Canucks

Vancouver has fared much better on the road than at home. This is an issue that needs to be fixed. The team ranks 24th in goals scored per game and 25th in goals against per game.

21. Minnesota Wild

Minnesota is hanging around due in part to the outstanding play of Kirill Kaprizov. However, the winger can use some help from his teammates. The Wild rank 20th in goals scored per game and 29th in goals against per game.

20. San Jose Sharks

San Jose is young, but competitive. They’ve played equally well at home as they have on the road. Center Macklin Celebrini ranks 5th in points and is stating his case to be a member of Team Canada for the upcoming Olympics.

19. Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto will be there at the end of the season, but have started like recent seasons. The Maple Leafs rank 5th in goals scored per game, but 30th in goals allowed per game. The front office must find a permanent fix for their goaltending woes.

18. Los Angeles Kings

Los Angeles is a reverse split team early on. The team is 1-4-2 at home and 6-1-2 on the road. It’s important to play well on the road, but the team must be better at home. Goal scoring is an issue as the team ranks 25th in goals scored per game.

17. Seattle Kraken

Seattle is another team playing much better at home than on the road. Scoring goals has been an issue, and a fix is needed. The team has seen its goaltenders play well and ranks 10th in goals against per game.

16. Detroit Red Wings

Detroit continues to play well at home, but are average on the road. The Red Wings can use another Bonafide goal scorer as they rank 21st in goals scored per game. The team’s goaltenders are playing surprisingly well.

15. Utah Mammoth

Utah is a sleeper team to watch during the season. The team is playing well and has the pieces to reach the playoffs. The Mammoth rank 14th in goals scored per game and 14th in goals against per game.

14. Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers continue to play well with center Trevor Zegras off to a hot start. The team has played close games and needs to improve on its 28th ranking in goals scored per game. The Flyers’ goaltenders have been tough and rank 5th in goals against per game.

13. Vegas Golden Knights

10. Ottawa Senators

Ottawa is getting it done while they wait for Brady Tkachuk to return to action. The team is outscoring opponents and ranks 8th in goals scored per game. The Senators’ downfall is their goaltending as they rank 31st in goals against per game.

7. Dallas Stars

Mikko Rantanen and Wyatt Johnston are blossoming into one of the league’s best one-two punches. Dallas has played close games but continues to find a way to win. The team’s Achilles heel has been goaltending. However, it’s only a matter of time before their goaltenders increase their production.

6. Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh continues to be one of the most consistent teams in the NHL. Veteran Sidney Crosby is leading the team and ranks 3rd among NHL goal-scoring leaders. The Penguins have been stout between the pipes, ranked 7th in goals against per game.
