It was reported on Tuesday that free agent running back Kareem Hunt visited the New Orleans Saints. I think a lot of people were surprised by this considering that the Saints already have a very crowded backfield, however, this must mean that the Saints are less enamored with their group than fantasy managers think.
Alvin Kamara will be missing the first three games due to a suspension and Jamaal Williams is expected to be the starting running back. But what this really means is that rookie running back Kendre Miller might not be as ready to assume a larger role in the Saints’ offense. Bringing in Kareem Hunt signifies that the Saints are in win-now mode and they want to be able to use Hunt as another receiving outlet for Derek Carr. I don’t think Williams and/or Miller are good enough in that role until Kamara returns.
On Wednesday, Hunt is expected to visit with the Indianapolis Colts. This feels like a much better match considering the status of Jonathan Taylor. Deon Jackson, Evan Hull and Kenyan Drake are all space fillers while Hunt can lead the team in touches until Taylor returns. Even if Taylor returns, Hunt would be a good second option to have in the backfield as he is an excellent receiver and a superior pass blocker.
Fantasy-wise, I will become very interested in Hunt if he should sign with the Colts. I see him stepping in right away and having a decent amount of fantasy value. Should Hunt end up with the Saints, I will continue to monitor the situation closely but more than likely pass on drafting him.
