The senior bowl is fast approaching and with that comes a new wave of rookie players to dive into. I strongly believe that drafting for need in rookie drafts leads to over drafting for need as the draft moves along. I approach rookie drafts very similar to every other aspect of how I play dynasty football. Its supply and demand. I want to have as many of the most valuable assets as I can. In Superflex or 2 QB leagues the QB position is elevated.
I typically develop a draft order and simply draft the highest player on my board at each selection. Each year I alter a bit of which positions those are, but this approach has always served me well with an abundance of young players. Last year that led me to 15 shares of Jayden Daniels. These teams didn’t all need a QB but having Daniels is always good no matter how the team is made up.
The first 20 selections are pretty easy. After that, I simply take my highest ranked player and then I kind of look each year at players and more specifically positions I want to key on. This year I’ve been won over on RB’s as a position group. I want to draft as many Kyren, Pacheco, Bucky, Chase Brown, Achane, & Guerendo shares as I can even if it means having like Spiller, Zamir White & Pierce on my squad that really don’t have value.
I have to avoid looking at my teams at times so I simply take the top player. Remember no starting lineup needs to be made in May when you draft rookies. Depth charts and injuries will affect the starting lineups a lot before week one and by the time the bye weeks roll around in week 5 the whole NFL will look quite different. Right now the big key is developing a draft list that can be slightly altered based on league scoring. Always draft the best player and build a dynasty with premium assets. You’ll be glad you did.
