We’re six weeks into the MLB season, and with some teams showing their playoff potential, others already falling out of the race, and some drama brewing in a major market, I decided to take a look at 5 trades that would be shocking, bold, but also make sense for all the teams involved:
Red Sox trade Rafael Devers To The Tigers

Devers has caused quite a stir in Boston with his recent comments regarding playing 1B. Red Sox starting 1B Triston Casas blew out his knee and will miss the remainder of the season. The Red Sox would be a better team with Devers at first, as it would open up the DH spot and also allow them to promote top prospect Roman Anthony. Due to all the drama, the Red Sox might look to trade Devers, and the Tigers, who are a strong contender this season, would be a perfect fit.
Angels Trade Mike Trout To The Phillies

Trout grew up a Phillies fan, so this would be a pretty cool story. But from a baseball standpoint, the Angels are once again toward the bottom of the standings, which means Trout will once again miss the playoffs if he stays with the Angels. The Philles are a World Series contender and would benefit greatly by adding a bat of Trout’s caliber. Seeing Trout in the postseason is something that any true baseball fan would love to see.
Marlins Trade Sandy Alcantara To The Yankees

Alcantara is a former NL Cy Young award winner who missed all of last season and is off to a rough start this season. Not only will he get better as the season progresses, but a change of scenery could do wonders for him. The Marlins are a last-place team, and trading Alcantara for future assets would benefit them. The Yankees have had starting pitching issues all season due to injuries to Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil, and could use another veteran starter.
White Sox Trade Luis Robert To The Astros

The White Sox are one of the worst teams in MLB, and Robert is one of their top assets. By the time they are ready to be competitive again, Robert will be past his prime and likely not even under contract anymore, so trading him while his value is high is the right thing for the White Sox to do. The Astros OF is weaker this year after trading away Kyle Tucker in the offseason, so adding a dynamic player like Robert would help them contend in a competitive AL West division.
Pirates Trade Bryan Reynolds To The Royals

Like the White Sox, the Pirates are one of the worst teams in MLB this season. They have Bryan Reynolds, who is a veteran switch-hitter who could help any number of teams looking to upgrade their offense. Reynolds will not be part of the Pirates next competitive team, so the Pirates should look to trade him while he is still a productive player. The Royals come to mind as a potential landing spot because they are coming off a 2024 playoff birth, and adding Reynolds to the middle of their lineup would be a huge boost.
