We’ve now reached the point of the season where hearts will be broken every single week. As losses pile up, there are more and more teams that become one loss away from CFP elimination. This is the worst-case scenario for a fan of these teams — you begin the season with National Championship aspirations, and by the end of October, the best you can do is the Pop-Tarts Bowl. In this sport, craziness happens every week. Let’s see if we can make bold predictions in Week 9 of the college football season:
Ole Miss travels to Norman and upsets the Sooners 27-10
I don’t understand why Oklahoma is favored in this game. Yes, their defense is outstanding, but I have no faith in them to manufacture points. John Mateer has not looked 100% since his return from injury, and the rest of the offense continues to be mediocre. Trinidad Chambliss and the Ole Miss offense looked great against Georgia, and I think they can get the train back on track this week.
North Carolina gives Virginia their first conference loss
They’ve been a punchline throughout much of the season, but I really liked what I saw out of Bill Belichick’s Tar Heels coming out of the bye last week against Cal. They had success running the ball and stopped the run as well. I’m a long-term believer in QB Gio Lopez’s talent, and think he can lead the Tar Heels to their first marquee win in the “Chapel Bill” era.
Diego Pavia accounts for 4 total TDs and 300 total yards as Vanderbilt beats Missouri
Just two years ago, the thought of Vanderbilt hosting College Gameday while being in the thick of the CFP race seemed totally unthinkable. This week, it’s a reality, thanks to QB Diego Pavia helping turn the program around. Is there any doubt that Pavia is going to rise to the occasion in his school’s biggest home game of the last 25 years?
Saturday Night in Death Valley gets the best of Texas A&M
LSU home games at night are the stuff of legend. While the Tiger offense has been quite impotent through most of the season, I believe the Aggies defense is a little overrated, and this could be a perfect launching point for a second-half resurgence of QB Garrett Nussmeier and a signature home upset for the Tigers.
Kentucky knocks off Tennessee, ending their CFP hopes
The Tennessee Volunteers may have only lost to Alabama and Georgia so far, but who have they beaten? Meanwhile, Kentucky has been close to upsetting both Ole Miss and Texas so far this season, and Cutter Boley is improving in every start. I think they bust down the door and pull off the big upset against the Vols this weekend.
