Top 10 Takeaways From Week 3’s NFL Action

Cam lists his top 10 takeaways from an absolutely insane third week of NFL games.

  1. The 49ers are now 3-0, and Brock Purdy is 8-0: The strange part of this whole QB saga for the Niners is that they proved they could win with Jimmy Garoppolo. So why did they have to mortgage their future for Trey Lance when apparently any Tom, Dick, Harry … or Brock can be successful in Kyle Shanahan’s system.
  2. Same old Cowboys: It is amazing that every time you think the Cowboys are turning a corner, they lose an extremely winnable game that makes their path much more difficult for a deep playoff run.
  3. Dolphins score 70: I’m not sure if this says more about the Dolphins or the Broncos. The good news for the Broncos is, it only counts as one loss. The bad news for the Dolphins is, it only counts as one win … and they have to go to Buffalo to play the Bills this week. I don’t get all of my predictions correct, but I guarantee that the Dolphins don’t slap 70 points on the Bills.
  4. Jaguars lose by 20 at home: One of this year’s “It” teams is now 1-2 after losing at home to the Texans by 20 points. They go to London this week in an effort to get back to .500. They cannot afford to come back to the States 1-3.
  5. The Patriots saved their season … for now: The Patriots were heading into the Meadowlands with the very real possibility of going 0-3, and then heading into Dallas with the specter of 0-4 staring them in the face. They pulled out a remarkably mediocre 15-10 win against the Jets, with a chance to get back to .500 against the suddenly beatable Cowboys.
  6. Chargers found a way to win, in spite of their head coach: Brandon Staley should be fired. He can cite all the algorithms he wants, but there are rules in football. One of them is, when you have a lead on your own side of the field, you punt the ball on fourth down. He decided to go for it at the end of the fourth quarter and it nearly cost his team a victory.
  7. Ravens lose at home: Knockout pools must have been destroyed this week between the losses of the Cowboys, Jaguars, and Ravens. In a division as tight as the AFC North, to lose a game at home against a very beatable opponent is really a lost opportunity. Instead of having sole possession of first place in the division with a 3-0 record, the Ravens find themselves tied with the Browns and Steelers at 2-1.
  8. Chargers WR Mike Williams out for the year: First it was Aaron Rodgers, then Nick Chubb, then Trevon Diggs, and now Mike Williams. The Chargers certainly have offensive weapons and depth at WR, but this is a huge blow.
  9. Three QBs are on a 5,000-yard pace: Kirk Cousins, Tua Tagovailoa, and Justin Herbert are all on pace to exceed 5,000 passing yards this season. Interestingly, Cousins hasn’t won a game yet, and Herbert has only won one.
  10. One RB and three WRs are on pace to exceed 2,000 yards: Christian McCaffrey is still on pace to reach 2,000 rushing yards this season, while Keenan Allen, Tyreek Hill, and Justin Jefferson are all on pace to exceed 2,000 receiving yards, with Jefferson on pace to reach 2,595 yards.
