In a league that strives for parity, the NFL must be in its glory because the league has never been so unpredictable. While six weeks isn’t a lifetime, it is a third of the season. Normally, there are still undefeated teams, but this year, there are only four teams left with one loss. The Jets remain the only team without a win.
This past week, five of the top 10 teams lost, including the top four-ranked teams. And of the eight divisions, only two teams that are currently in first place finished last season as divisional winners.
With that in mind, here are this week’s rankings:
1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
Tampa Bay is one of those teams leading their division that ended last year in first place. Baker Mayfield is showing no signs of slowing down and is getting serious MVP chatter. They face a tough Lions team, coming off a tough loss, this Monday Night.
2. Indianapolis Colts:
Danny Diamonds just keeps chugging along. They faced a tougher-than-expected Arizona Cardinals team, without Kyler Murray. But a win is a win, and a 31-27 victory surely counts.
3. Detroit Lions:
The Lions cannot stand prosperity. They climbed to the top of the mountain last week, reaching the no.1 spot on this list, only to lose a tough road matchup in Kansas City.
4. San Francisco 49ers:
The Niners had to travel cross-country to face the best team in the league at the moment. They left, losing 30-17 to a very resilient Buccaneers team. Mac Jones continued to play well, but did show a few chinks in the armor for the first time this year.
5. Los Angeles Rams:
Sometimes it’s when you play a team…the Rams were fortunate to travel to Baltimore with Lamar Jackson on the shelf and the Ravens in disarray.
6. Los Angeles Chargers:
The Chargers were another team traveling across the country this weekend. And they were another team to be facing an opponent at the right time. It took a last-second comeback by Justin Herbert to overtake the hapless Dolphins, but they are 4-2 and tied with the Broncos.
7. Denver Broncos:
Speaking of the Broncos, they traveled to London and left with a win. They could only muster 13 points, but that proved to be enough against an awful Jets team.
8. Philadelphia Eagles:
One loss is an anomaly and fluke…two in a row is a trend. This seems to be the annual swoon and inner turmoil that the Eagles seem to face each year. Two years ago, they couldn’t overcome it, while last year they were able to win the Super Bowl. It will be interesting to see how they respond this year. They head to Minnesota this week to try to right the ship.
9. Buffalo Bills:
Speaking of a team in a freefall…I give you the Buffalo Bills. They, too, have lost two in a row. I’m not sure which loss was more alarming: a home loss in primetime against the New England Patriots or a road primetime game against the Atlanta Falcons. This week’s bye couldn’t come at a better time for the Bills.
10. Kansas City Chiefs:
With their win against the Lions, the Chiefs have clawed back into the top 10 with their 3-3 record. Some feel that even with three losses, they should be ranked much higher, but I disagree…let them string a few together and at least get back into first place in the AFC West before we anoint them the cream of the crop again.
11. Seattle Seahawks:
The Seahawks are tied with the Niners and Rams in the NFC West with a 4-2 record. They face the Texans at home on Monday night. Normally, that’s a good thing, but they have been far better on the road lately than at the home of the 12th Man.
12. Green Bay Packers:
With their 3-1-1 record, the Packers find themselves in first place in the NFC North. They cannot blink because every team in this division is over .500.
13. Pittsburgh Steelers:
The Steelers are another new first-place team. They are sitting at 4-1, with a two and a half game lead in their division. They are on the road, heading into a short week, facing the Bengals on Thursday night. A win would nearly clinch the division and ensure yet another .500 season for Mike Tomlin and the Steelers. This feels like a reverse lock. All signs point to the Steelers, which means Cincinnati will win by three touchdowns.
14. New England Patriots:
A former Patriots HC famously said, you are what your record says you are. Well, after week six, the Patriots are sitting at 4-2, and in first place in the AFC East. They have now matched their win total in each of the last two seasons.
15. Jacksonville Jaguars:
Just when people started to believe in the Jaguars, they put up a stinker. They lost 20-12 at home against the road warrior, Seattle Seahawks. They are now 4-2, a game behind the Colts.
16. Chicago Bears:
Caleb Williams may have won his signature game on Monday, going into Washington, DC, and coming out with a one-point victory, 25-24. They are now sitting at 3-2 and smack dab in the middle of a playoff chase.
17. Washington Commanders:
This loss against the Bears was a gut punch for the Commanders. A win would have tied them with the Eagles at 4-2. But they are now 3-3 and heading on the road to face the Cowboys, who are desperately in need of a win themselves.
18. Minnesota Vikings:
The Vikings are coming off a bye and will be facing the Eagles in Minnesota. With the Eagles on a two-game losing streak, Minnesota may wish they had the bye this week.
19. Houston Texans:
The Texans are also coming off a bye. After starting the season 0-3, they are on a two-game winning streak. For that to continue, they have to leave the Pacific Northwest with a win in Seattle.
20. Carolina Panthers:
Maybe I tried to bury the Panthers too quickly. After losing their first two games, they’ve rebounded nicely, winning three out of their last four games, clawing back to .500. And they have an extremely winnable road game this week against the 0-6 Jets.
21. Atlanta Falcons:
If any team proved this is a week-to-week league, the Falcons are it. In wk.3, they lost 30-0 to the Panthers. On Monday, they dominated the Buffalo Bills, winning 24-14.
22. Baltimore Ravens:
If Lamar Jackson doesn’t return soon, the Ravens will continue to lose and continue to slide down this list. This bye week coming up has never been more needed.
23. Dallas Cowboys:
The Cowboys just lost to the Panthers in a game, versus the type of opponent they must defeat if they have playoff aspirations. At 2-3-1, this week’s matchup against the Commanders is almost a must-win situation.
24. Las Vegas Raiders:
The Raiders are now 2-4, but heading to Kansas City to face a Chiefs team suddenly playing well. The Chiefs are home and unlikely to lose.
25. Arizona Cardinals:
Jacoby Brissett played very well filling in for Kyler Murray this week in Indianapolis, but the Cardinals came up a bit short, losing 31-27. They now find themselves two games behind all three fellow NFC West teams.
26. Cincinnati Bengals:
At 2-4, the Bengals are somehow in second place in the AFC North. They face the Steelers this week in Cincinnati, and then host the 0-6 Jets. After that, they have a winnable game against Chicago. If they can sweep these three home games, they’ll be 5-4 and right in the hunt for a division title.
27. New York Giants:
The Giants are now 2-4, easily dismantling their divisional rival, the Philadelphia Eagles. Rookie Jaxson Dart is looking like a legitimate NFL QB, and his team seems to love him. The next two weeks will speak volumes. They head to Denver and then have a rematch with the Eagles in Philadelphia. At best, they can hope for a split.
28. Tennessee Titans:
Titans HC Brian Callahan has won the lottery. Not exactly the lottery you want to win, but he does have the distinction as the first coach fired in the 2025 season. Ironically, they play the New England Patriots this week at home, facing off against former HC Mike Vrabel.
29. New Orleans Saints:
Spencer Rattler played well against the Patriots. Their defense did not. It seems like Drake Maye was throwing 40-yard TD passes on every other play. He would have had even more if the refs didn’t bail out the Saints secondary on a few very questionable pass interference calls.
30. Miami Dolphins:
Mike McDaniel managed not to be the first HC to be fired this season. They did play hard against the Chargers, which tells me he hasn’t lost the team…yet.
31. Cleveland Browns:
Thank God for the Jets, because that’s the only reason the Browns aren’t last on this list.
32. New York Jets:
I was so wrong about this team, with Justin Fields at the helm. Anemic doesn’t even describe how bad the Jets offense was this past week in London against the Broncos.
