Welcome to the 2025 Season of Dynasty Fantasy Football. If you’re reading football content then I suspect like me you work on your rosters all 12 months and have dedication to winning championships. During the next few months I really do the same things just many times and begin to formulate how I will differentiate myself from the rest of the community.
I play a contrarian form of fantasy football and so to do that at a high level I take this time to understand my teams but also understand my leagues and how other owners react to news. At this juncture we all hear the news but how we apply it is what separates us from the other players in our leagues. I’ve found this is the number one time to make trades with my leaguemates as many of them are simply bored and will make trades just to make trades. Rather than complaining how the trade that happened with your leaguemates is a league altering bad trade, continue to dialog with your league mates through chat features and also pick their brain on who are the players they are seeking. Take notes and keep this for a time that you can utilize the information.
I’m currently going through each of my teams in a deep dive situation working my way through all 55 dynasty teams looking at how I will apply what I’ve learned as I reviewed my season and how I can make sure the team is going to perform better next year. To be simplistic as I look at my teams I want to make sure the franchise is working toward profitability. I look at this over a 10 year period. I obsess over staying young and attempt to get rid of players a year early rather than getting rid of players a year late.
I do own some older players but I try to have a plan in place to replace them. To begin looking at each team I first want to make sure that I have a team that has enough quality at each position to be successful. A couple of key numbers I look at are how deep are the rosters and how many starters at each position. In most leagues that employ 1 starter at a position I try to only hold the starter and use my bench positions for other positions. Bench spots have a great deal of value in dynasty leagues. I try to look at positions that might hold scarcity and attack them with my bench spots. In multiple QB leagues I attack QB’s as they are limited to 32 at the most in any given week. In a 12 team Superflex league each team would prefer to start 2.
That gives us 24 starters in a given week with 32 available. 8 of the 12 teams can have that 3rd on the bench. Now take those numbers to an extreme with controlling supply. If you were to have 10 starting QB’s on your roster that leaves 22 for the rest of the league. If the league has perfect balance and everyone has 2 then each team starts their two however with you beginning to hold the QB position it creates a frenzy where the asset you hold becomes increasingly valuable. Other owners in dynasty will begin to have 4 or 5 and what happens is a supply problem with the highest scoring position and one that you hold a monopoly on in the given league. I prefer for others to sell their QB depth first so that they set the market that way I’m just asking for the going rate not trying to take advantage of the market. It definitely is a longer play however I find that when someone needs a QB in most leagues I play in they come to me for a QB. I always want to sell players at their peak value and buy players when they are cheap so players I’m buying are players like Trevor or maybe bryce young while selling baker mayfield or any older QBs such as Stafford or Geno.
To be clear I don’t dump these players waiting for others to set the market. I’d rather cut a QB to waivers once they are done than sell for a 2nd round rookie pick. This year I held players like Winston or Flacco rather than sell for a 2nd so that my leaguemates had to lose that given week. In future years they’ll continue to lose or they will pay me a 1st round rookie pick plus for those backup QB types. Remember I want to do this so I drive up the market on positions I own.
