The Seattle Mariners are making a major move as they attempt to climb back into the American League playoff picture. Seattle is calling up Kade Anderson, the top pitching prospect in baseball, and the left-hander is expected to make his MLB debut Saturday against the Chicago Cubs.

The promotion gives the Mariners another potential difference-maker at a time when they desperately need to start winning games.

Anderson Has Dominated the Minors

Anderson has done just about everything possible to earn this opportunity.

The 22-year-old was selected by Seattle with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft out of LSU, and he has been sensational in his first professional season. Through 93 1/3 innings, Anderson owns a microscopic 1.06 ERA, along with 135 strikeouts, 13 walks and 47 hits allowed. He has also gone 10-1 in 18 starts for Double-A Arkansas.

Those numbers have made Anderson the No. 1 pitching prospect in baseball and the No. 5 overall prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He has been so dominant that the Mariners decided the time had come to see what he could do against major league hitters.

Anderson’s performance is particularly impressive considering he is less than a year removed from being drafted.

Mariners Need a Spark

The timing of the promotion is hardly a coincidence.

Seattle enters the weekend trying to revive its playoff hopes after falling into a difficult stretch. The Mariners are 60-68 and sit three games behind the Minnesota Twins for the final American League Wild Card spot, making every game increasingly important.

Anderson will make his debut Saturday against the Cubs, giving Seattle an intriguing matchup and potentially providing a huge boost to its rotation.

The Mariners aren’t simply calling up a promising young arm. They’re bringing in a pitcher who has been virtually unhittable throughout his first professional season.

Of course, there is no guarantee that Anderson immediately dominates at the MLB level. The jump from Double-A to the majors is significant, and opposing hitters will provide his toughest challenge yet.

But considering what he has accomplished so far, it’s easy to understand why Seattle is excited.

The Mariners need wins, and they’re hoping their top pitching prospect can help deliver them.
