College Basketball Transfer Portal Update: Top 300 Rankings & Analysis Of Recent Moves

College basketball expert Mike Holland updates and expands his CBB Transfer Portal Rankings.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 28: Oumar Ballo #11 of the Arizona Wildcats celebrates in a game against the Clemson Tigers during the second half in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Crypto.com Arena on March 28, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. Offseason College Basketball is crazier than the March Madness Tournament itself when you consider NIL and players no longer having to sit out following a transfer. With a flurry of action over the last week between new commitments and new entrants, our Transfer Portal Big Board is now up to 300 players. Here’s a look at some of the latest movement around the country.

Michigan College Basketball Transfer Portal Update

The Michigan Wolverines and new Head Coach Dusty May picked up business over the last four days, scoring five commitments from our Top 300. The headliner of the group is Yale center Danny Wolf (#28), who helped lead the Yale Bulldogs to an Ivy League Tournament Championship and one of the biggest upsets in the NCAA Tournament over Auburn. He’s a skilled seven-footer with the ability to stretch the floor. The Wolverines also added a pair of wings in Ohio State’s Roddy Gayle (#57) and Alabama’s Sam Walters (#200). They have contrasting skill sets, with Gayle being more of a slasher and Walters a 3-point marksman, which will add to the versatility of the Wolverine offense. May also reeled in very talented and underrated guards in Auburn’s Tre Donaldson (#182) and North Texas’ Rubin Jones (#179). Donaldson has immense upside; he was in a time-share at Auburn last year but produced nearly a three-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio. Jones is an active 3-and-D player who blossomed in a bigger role last season for the Mean Green. Both players shot over 40% from 3 last season. These additions will certainly raise the expectation for Coach May to get this program back to the NCAA Tournament after an 8-24 season.

Georgetown College Basketball Transfer Portal Update

Ed Cooley and the Georgetown Hoyas experienced a rough first year, but that was to be expected for a program that had gone 2-37 prior to his arrival last summer. Make no mistake, Cooley has done a tremendous job assembling talent during the offseason. The incoming class features three of our Top 300 players and is headlined by Harvard phenom guard Malik Mack (#14). Mack burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2023 with his ability to score the basketball and create at a high rate. If Georgetown is able to hold onto guard Jayden Epps, the duo has the potential to be one of the best in the country offensively. Due to both guards lacking size, there are some concerns defensively. That is where the commitments of TCU wing Micah Peavy (#32) and Louisville wing Curtis Williams (#282) come into play. Peavy is a talented two-way player who made four straight NCAA Tournaments with the Horned Frogs. His versatility on both ends is something Georgetown has not had in quite some time. While Williams won’t come in with as much fanfare, he’s an intriguing player. He showed flashes during his freshman year, including a big game against Florida State when he scored 19 points in one of Louisville’s few wins. Look for the Hoyas to get out of the Big East cellar with the type of talent Coach Cooley is assembling in year two.

Grand Canyon College Basketball Transfer Portal Update

Finally, what kind of full College Basketball coverage would it be without some love for the Mid-Major ranks? Coach Bryce Drew and his Grand Canyon Antelopes are coming off an incredible season that saw them win the WAC and pull off a first-round upset over St. Mary’s in March. Yes, they may be losing Tyon Grant-Foster, but they are adding two very good players to a roster that is already expected to return star guard Ray Harrison. The first is former starting TCU center JaKobe Coles (#141). Coles generated an impressive 49/42/77 line during his fourth year. He is poised to have a big year coming to the WAC from a very tough Big 12. He is joined by former UT-Arlington stud guard Makaih Williams (#214). Williams comes over within the conference as the reigning WAC Rookie of the Year. He himself produced a very impressive line of 44/45/76 in his first year of college ball. Grand Canyon is once again looking like a team that will challenge for back-to-back 30-win seasons.
