College Basketball Transfer Portal Rankings: Top 250 Available Players

College basketball expert Mike Holland updates his Transfer Portal rankings and gives his take on some of the biggest recent commitments.

Portal news never stops. We are entering the middle of April with plenty of names already on the board, but undergraduates still have until May 1st to enter the Transfer Portal. Luckily for you, we are keeping track of the madness daily. That includes expanding from our initial Top 200 to an all-new Top 250 Transfer Big Board. Here are just some of the newsworthy notes from across the land:

Chris Beard and his Ole Miss program continue to make gains heading into year two. Beard was able to secure the frontcourt commitments of Mikeal Brown-Jones (#15, UNC-Greensboro) and Malik Dia (#28, Belmont). Brown-Jones broke out last year, showing big-time offensive versatility. He shot 44% from three and was 10th in the country in fouls drawn per 40. Dia was another breakout star and led the country in usage rate while also ranking inside the Top 50 in fouls drawn per 40. Both rebound the ball well and have the ability to make plays on the defensive end.

Penny Hardaway and the Memphis Tigers have made a habit of bringing in an abundance of talent from the portal over recent years, and this year is no different. They have locked up three players on our Big Board, with commitments from PJ Haggerty (#16, Tulsa), Dain Dainja (#49, Illinois), and Colby Rogers (#122, Wichita State). Haggerty is a big-time scorer from the guard position and should thrive in Penny’s system. Dainja is one of the best per-minute producers in the country and has big upside offensively. Rogers is a versatile backcourt option who shot 40% from 3 last season.

The Jayhawks have also made some noise after a disappointing, injury-filled end to their year. Bill Self isn’t wasting any time going after reinforcements and has already landed two of the Top 50 players on our board. KU was able to nab Summit League Player of the Year when guard Zeke Mayo (#31, North Dakota State) declared he was coming home. Mayo provides instant offense as a combo guard who can not only shoot it from deep but also create for others. Joining Mayo is guard Riley Kugel (#46, Florida), who is coming off a roller coaster of a year. Kugel had a ton of hype as a Preseason SEC Second Team pick, but things just didn’t work out. He’s shown that type of ability, and Kansas fans hope he can tap into that immense potential.

Dennis Gates brought a ton of excitement to Missouri in year one by making the tournament, but the honeymoon quickly ended in year two with the Tigers failing to win one SEC game. They were dead last during SEC play in Defensive Efficiency and struggled to score the ball, especially from deep. It’s clear that Coach Gates isn’t wasting time getting this roster back where it needs to be. He’s scooped up two of our Top 75 players in the portal with the additions of guard Tony Perkins (#32, Iowa) and wing Jacob Crews (#69, Tennessee-Martin), who can make a difference on both ends of the floor. Perkins was one of the better guards in the Big Ten, excelling at getting into the lane and playing tough defense. Crews will bring outside shooting after connecting for 40% of his tries from 3 last season, and his length and unique skillset give him versatility on both ends of the floor.
