The Dallas Cowboys are making significant changes to their defense after a disappointing start to the 2026 NFL season, but owner Jerry Jones does not believe rookie defensive coordinator Christian Parker has been overwhelmed by the challenge. Instead, Jones pointed to the sheer number of changes Dallas has made to its scheme, coaching staff, and personnel as a major reason for the defense’s struggles.
Dallas is 2-3 through five games and currently ranks 31st in the NFL in total defense, allowing 395.4 yards per game. The Cowboys are now moving Parker from the sideline to the coaches’ booth while also adding veteran defensive coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant.
Jerry Jones defends Christian Parker

Jones was asked Tuesday directly whether Parker has been overwhelmed during his first season as an NFL defensive coordinator. The Cowboys owner pushed back on that characterization.
βNo, I donβt think thatβs the right word,β Jones said. βI think heβs covering a lot of ground.β
Jones explained that Dallas has essentially rebuilt its defensive operation in several areas. The Cowboys changed their defensive scheme, replaced much of the coaching staff, and brought in a significant number of new players, including veterans who are learning the system rather than simply rookie additions.
βYou put that all together, and youβve got some work to do to put that all in place relative to the challenges you have when you really get into the ballgames,β Jones said.
That context is important because Parker is only 32 and is in his first season running an NFL defense. Dallas expected the transition to come with challenges, but the results through five games have accelerated the need for adjustments.
The Cowboys’ decision to move Parker into the coaching booth is another attempt to give him a different perspective on the defense while allowing him to focus more heavily on the overall scheme.
Cowboys add Mike Pettine to help the defense

The Cowboys are also bringing in Pettine, a veteran coach with extensive defensive experience, to work alongside Parker. Pettine previously served as a defensive coordinator with the Jets, Bills, and Packers and was also the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
Jones indicated that Dallas had wanted to add Pettine earlier. According to Jones, the team would have made the move before the season if Pettine had been available.
The hire makes sense because Pettine already has connections to both Parker and head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Pettine hired Parker for his first NFL coaching position as a defensive quality control coach in Green Bay in 2019, while Pettine and Schottenheimer previously worked together with the Jets. Pettine also directly coached three current Cowboys players during his career.
The Cowboys are therefore making it clear that Parker remains their defensive coordinator, but they also recognize that the young coach needs additional support.
For Dallas, the goal is simple: find a way to fix a defense that has struggled badly through five games before the problems become even more difficult to overcome.
