The Las Vegas Raiders received some much-needed positive news regarding Ashton Jeanty ahead of their Week 1 matchup against the Miami Dolphins.

After suffering an ankle injury late in training camp that initially looked concerning, the second-year running back has returned to practice and is on track to play Sunday. Jeanty’s availability is especially important for a Raiders offense counting on him to be one of its biggest playmakers in 2026.

Jeanty returns to practice

Jeanty had not practiced since suffering the right ankle injury on August 23. He was initially unable to put weight on the leg after landing awkwardly while diving for a low pass, creating immediate concern that the injury could threaten his availability for the season opener.

Instead, Jeanty made his return Wednesday and was listed as a full participant on the Raiders’ first official injury report of the regular season. That is a significant development and strongly indicates he will be available against Miami.

Head coach Klint Kubiak and general manager John Spytek had remained optimistic about Jeanty’s chances of playing, and the Raiders’ decision not to place him on injured reserve also suggested the injury was not considered severe.

Raiders need their star running back

Jeanty’s return is even more important following the news that tight end Brock Bowers is expected to miss Week 1 after undergoing meniscus surgery. Without Bowers, the Raiders will need other offensive weapons to step up immediately.

Jeanty is coming off an impressive rookie season in which he recorded 975 rushing yards and 1,321 total scrimmage yards after being selected sixth overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. He is expected to play a major role in Kubiak’s offense, both as a runner and receiver.

There could still be some caution with his workload after missing nearly three weeks of practice, particularly with rookie Mike Washington Jr. available behind him.

But the biggest takeaway is simple: Ashton Jeanty is expected to be on the field when the Raiders open the 2026 season Sunday.
