The Maxx Crosby-to-Dallas Cowboys rumors appeared to be fading, but suddenly there is a reason to start talking about the blockbuster trade again.
The Cowboys have created more than $19 million in additional salary-cap space by restructuring the contracts of Kenny Clark, DaRon Bland, and Jake Ferguson, giving Dallas more than $30 million in available room. And wouldn’t you know it, Crosby’s 2026 base salary is approximately $30 million.
Cowboys suddenly have the money to make a major move
The timing of these moves is certainly interesting.
Dallas had roughly $14.2 million in cap space before the restructurings. After converting portions of the three contracts, the Cowboys now have enough financial flexibility to absorb a significant veteran contract via trade.
Jerry Jones isn’t exactly hiding the fact that something could be coming, either.
Jones recently said the Cowboys have “serious” financial room to make a trade and acknowledged that the restructuring moves were designed to give the team flexibility. He also indicated that Dallas is in play to make a move before the November 10 trade deadline, with the defensive side of the ball being the most likely target.
That immediately makes Crosby worth discussing again.
Maxx Crosby would change the Cowboys’ defense
Crosby remains one of the NFL’s premier pass rushers, and adding him would give Dallas another difference-maker alongside Quinnen Williams and the revamped defensive front.
The financial side is more complicated than simply matching Crosby’s $30 million salary to Dallas’ $30-plus million in cap space. Crosby currently carries a $35.8 million cap charge, according to Over The Cap, so Dallas would likely need to restructure his contract after acquiring him.
According to Over The Cap’s analysis, Dallas could potentially convert a large portion of Crosby’s salary into a bonus after a trade, significantly reducing his immediate cap hit.
There is no indication that a Crosby trade is imminent, and the Raiders have not announced any intention to move their superstar.
But the Cowboys have now created the financial flexibility to make a blockbuster move.
