Top MLB Team Fits For Free Agent 1B Pete Alonso

As Pete Alonso enters free agency, his destination will be followed closely. His final choice will likely come down to team fit, competitive aspirations, and budget, making his free agency one of the most intriguing of the offseason. Here are seven teams likely in the mix for the power-hitting first baseman.

New York Mets

The Mets remain a strong contender to re-sign Alonso, as he’s a fan favorite and integral to their lineup. Despite turning down a previous extension, Alonso has expressed his love for New York, and the Mets may prioritize keeping him. The only way I can see Alonso not signing with the Mets is if they sign Juan Soto and then decide to allocate money elsewhere. The Mets aren’t worried about money, though; in fact, re-signing Alonso might be a sign to Juan Soto that they will do anything it takes to win.

Seattle Mariners

Seattle’s lineup lacks a power bat, and Alonso could fill that role, providing a stable first-base presence after a season of rotating players in that spot. The Mariners are reportedly willing to invest in a big bat like Alonso’s to boost their offense. He would be a great fit for them, especially in a pitcher-friendly ballpark, because no ballpark is big enough to hold Alonso’s power. The Mariners are a team that should be very active on all the big hitters after finishing the season with one of the best pitching staffs.

Houston Astros

With a revolving door at first base this past season, the Astros need a reliable power hitter to complement their core. Alonso’s bat could help fill that void. They might lose long-time 3B Alex Bregman as well, so bringing in an impact bat is one of their top priorities this offseason. Alonso could hit 50-plus HR playing 81 home games in Houston with the short porch in LF.

New York Yankees

The Yankees are another top option, with a likely opening at first base after they declined Anthony Rizzo’s option. If the Yankees miss out on bringing back Juan Soto, they will need to act quickly to add to their lineup. I personally don’t think they need another right-handed power first bat in their lineup, considering they already have Judge and Stanton, but that won’t stop them from panic-signing Alonso.

San Francisco Giants

The Giants are going to be linked to nearly every big free-agent bat. They need offensive reinforcements to contend in a very good NL West with the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Padres. Alonso’s power would translate well to Oracle Park, where he could thrive as the Giants’ primary power threat and add an element to the offense that they have lacked for many years.

Chicago Cubs

Known to be interested, the Cubs could use Alonso’s power at Wrigley Field, especially now that they have brought lefty Cody Bellinger back for 2025. Alonso’s presence would bolster Chicago’s offense and fit their need for a consistent power hitter. The Cubs have a lot of young prospects close to making a difference at the big league level, so adding a veteran presence like Alonso would be a good way to complement that.

Washington Nationals

Though not a high-profile landing spot, the Nationals need a power bat in the middle of their order. Alonso would provide a much-needed offensive boost for a young team looking to rebuild quickly. The Nationals were better than expected last season, and with young potential stars in James Wood and Dylan Crews, adding a presence like Alonso would be a big move, especially stealing him from their division rival Mets.
