The NFL playoff picture is beginning to take shape entering Week 9, with several teams separating themselves from the rest of the conference contenders. Following the conclusion of Week 8, the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers occupy the top seeds, while the NFC North has made an impressive statement by placing all four of its teams inside the projected playoff field.
No team has clinched a playoff berth, and there is still plenty of time for the standings to change. However, the current projections provide an early look at what the postseason bracket could look like if the season ended today.
Bills, Broncos lead AFC playoff picture

The Bills currently hold the AFC’s No. 1 seed with a 6-1 record, putting them in position for the conference’s only first-round bye. Denver follows at No. 2 with a 6-2 record, while Pittsburgh is also 6-2 and occupies the third seed.
Jacksonville currently leads the AFC South and holds the No. 4 seed at 5-2. The remaining three playoff spots belong to the Kansas City Chiefs (No. 5), Cincinnati Bengals (No. 6) and New England Patriots (No. 7).
That leaves the Cleveland Browns on the outside looking in despite a 5-3 record. Las Vegas and Baltimore are also in contention at 4-4, making the AFC wild-card race one to watch as the schedule moves forward.
The upcoming schedule offers several important opportunities for teams to improve their positioning. Denver visits Carolina, Jacksonville travels to Baltimore, and Kansas City hosts the New York Jets. Cincinnati also faces Atlanta in Madrid, while New England welcomes Green Bay.
49ers lead crowded NFC playoff field

The 49ers have taken over the NFC’s No. 1 seed with a 6-1 record, narrowly ahead of the Minnesota Vikings, who also sit at 6-1. San Francisco currently holds the tiebreaker, while the New York Giants occupy the No. 3 spot at 4-2-1. Carolina rounds out the division leaders as the No. 4 seed with a 3-4 record.
The wild-card picture is especially interesting. The Chicago Bears (6-2), Detroit Lions (5-2) and Green Bay Packers (5-3) currently occupy the final three playoff positions. That means every NFC North team would qualify for the postseason if the season ended today.
The Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams are both 4-4 and currently sit just outside the playoff field. Tampa Bay, Atlanta and Arizona are also looking to make a move, while the Dallas Cowboys remain on the outside at 3-5 following their disappointing loss to the Cardinals. Philadelphia currently holds the NFC’s worst record at 2-6.
With several important conference matchups approaching, the Week 9 schedule could bring another significant shakeup to the NFL playoff picture.
