For more than a decade, Rudy Martin Jr. kept chasing the same dream. Now, at 30 years old, the longtime minor leaguer is finally getting his opportunity in the majors.

The Toronto Blue Jays are calling up Martin from Triple-A Buffalo, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, putting the outfielder in position to make his MLB debut after 12 years in the minor leagues.

Martin’s long road to the majors

Martin was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 25th round of the 2014 MLB Draft, a round that no longer exists after the draft was reduced to 20 rounds. Since then, he has spent time throughout the minor leagues, along with stops in independent baseball and Mexico, continuing to work toward reaching the majors.

The 30-year-old finally earned that opportunity after joining the Blue Jays organization this summer. Toronto claimed him off waivers in July, and he spent time with Triple-A Buffalo before getting the call to Toronto.

Martin has also shown plenty of ability to impact a game with his speed. Across his minor league career, he has 239 stolen bases, while his 2026 season has included 45 steals and a .274 batting average in the minors.

The timing makes Martin’s promotion even more interesting.

Toronto is fighting to remain in the American League playoff race, meaning Martin isn’t simply being called up to provide a feel-good story during a rebuilding season. The Blue Jays need production and depth as they push toward the postseason.

Martin’s versatility could make him useful immediately. He has experience playing all three outfield positions and bats left-handed, giving Toronto another option depending on the matchup.

The Blue Jays made room for Martin by designating outfielder Jesús Sánchez for assignment.

After 12 years of minor league baseball, countless bus rides, and plenty of uncertainty, Martin is finally on the doorstep of the moment he has spent his entire professional career waiting for.

The dream that began when the Royals selected him in the 25th round back in 2014 is finally about to become a reality.
