It’s trading season and time to look at the “why” we make trades. Many owners simply make trades because it’s fun, and while I understand that, I like to look at why I make trades. I follow some simple concepts to figure out if the trade makes sense to me. Trades aren’t good or bad or winning or losing, they are simply profitable or unprofitable.
So what makes a trade profitable? We need to first look at all trades through this simple filter. Does this make my team better? Many times we say I don’t know. Well notice the word no inside of “kNOw” unless you can say YES to this question than a simple decline is in order. Lots of owners like to ask an “Expert” or look at a trade calculator, however those can’t ever know how your league values players. If the trade makes your team better than it’s a good trade.
If its just moving pieces around then its just a trade to trade. I don’t view teams as going for it or rebuilding, but more of a retooling and looking to make sure you consistently can say that your team will be better next year than it is this year. This can be accomplished by having more draft picks than norma, by having players that become 2nd or 3rd year players and consistently having players that aren’t on the back nine of their careers.
Of my 55 teams, I only have 1 share of Derek Henry and only 1 share of CMC, but on both of these teams I have many young RB’s so I’m simply going to retire them and begin to roll with my new players. I have 2 Shares of Aaron Rodgers, so I’m looking to move on from him, but realizing my acquisition cost was so low that even if I retire him this year I don’t lose much.
