We are midway through June. The US Open is going on, and the final round traditionally falls on Father’s Day. And within a few weeks, we’ll be at the halfway point of the baseball season.
About half of fantasy baseball players are already in the football season. For fantasy sports writers, the transition from baseball to football is in full effect. Being from the northeast, specifically Massachusetts, and even more specifically, from Foxboro, MA, this week is even harder.
All attention has been paid to the NBA Finals between the Mavericks and the Celtics. And now, a little angst and indigestion have developed after Dallas’s beating of Boston Friday night. On top of that, on Wednesday, the New England Patriots honored Tom Brady, inducting him into their Hall of Fame and retiring his number.
What an event that was. Jay-Z opened the show with “Public Service Announcement,” and over the next three hours, there were life and video tributes to the GOAT. Peyton Manning made an appearance, as did well over 100 former Patriots, to celebrate Brady. Later in the show, Kenny Chesney sang “Boys of Fall,” and Bono closed out the festivities with a video talking about the Pats’ first Super Bowl and their halftime show, singing “Beautiful Day”…as “Beautiful Day” blared to a fireworks display.
Other than the reception Brady received, Bill Belichick and, surprisingly, Randy Moss received the largest ovations. Owner Robert Kraft’s reception was lukewarm, even when he announced that the team was commissioned to commission a 12-foot bronze statue.
Needless to say, it’s been a hectic week, but duty calls. Hopefully, you are still in a position to care about which starters will make two starts this upcoming week. I’ve identified four you should consider.

FIGHTING APATHY
Jose Soriano, Los Angeles Angels
Soriano has been one of the only bright spots for the Angels this season, which is saying something since he is below .500 with a 4-5 record. He has a nice 1.18 WHIP and 3.48 ERA on the year, and at least one of his starts this week is against a favorable matchup, against the Brewers at home. He faces the Dodgers on the road at the end of the week.
Carson Spiers, Cincinnati Reds
Spiers has made five relief appearances this season with solid results and is entering the rotation on Monday to make his first start. So far, he’s struck out 15 batters in 19.1 innings and has a 1.19 WHIP and 2.33 ERA. He’s being eased into the rotation with two soft landing spots this week against the Pirates and the Red Sox.
Bailey Falter, Pittsburgh Pirates
Falter will be facing off against Spiers on Monday. He is a classic pitch-to-contact pitcher. In his 13 starts, he’s thrown 72.1 innings with only 49 Ks under his belt. But his ratios are solid with a 3.86 ERA and 1.11 WHIP, and he’s sitting at 3-4 on the season. He’ll be facing Tampa Bay at the end of the week.
Cal Quantrill, Colorado Rockies
The Guardians may regret moving on from Quantrill. This is the type of performance they were hoping to get out of him. In 14 starts with the Rockies, he is 6-4 with a 3.30 ERA and 1.25 WHIP, with an outside shot at making the NL All-Star team.
