It’s hard to believe May is behind us. It’s hard to believe that by the end of this month, half the baseball season will be in the rearview mirror. But here we are, all contemplating the rest of the season and deciding how much time to devote to baseball and how much to focus on the upcoming fantasy football season.
For all of us seamheads, this is a tough time of year. Whether we like it or not, baseball is no longer the national pastime. For fantasy sites, football season pays the bills and keeps the lights on, and baseball (and all other sports) is simply a placeholder and distraction for the main course, which is the NFL.
That being said, there are a few of us hanging on. But that being said, we have to be realistic about our chances, and this is the time to start making the hard choices. With over 2,000 team ABs and 600 innings pitched already, it’s awfully tough to make up ground in the ratio categories.
And specifically on the pitching side, it’s even more daunting. Most standard leagues have two ratios: ERA and WHIP. So, deciding to snag mediocre pitchers to gain a few extra innings that won’t move the needle anyway can feel like grasping at straws.
With that said, picking up an extra win and grabbing a few extra Ks could make all the difference in the world. The potential upside definitely outweighs and negative by a bad outing at this time of year.

This week, three pitchers should be available in your leagues, slated to make two starts:
Bryse Wilson-Milwaukee Brewers
Wilson has only started half of his 14 outings this season, but for now, he is in the rotation. He has two road games this week, facing the Phillies on Monday and the Tigers at the end of the week. He is 3-1 with a 3.19 ERA and 1.23 WHIP.
Kyle Gibson-St. Louis Cardinals
Gibson finds himself with a winning record of 4-2 on a mediocre Cardinals team that will be sellers over the next few months…including Gibson himself. He’s on a $12M deal and club option next year, which they won’t pick up. He’s pitched well and will help a contender at the back end of some contender’s rotation.
Andrew Abbott-Cincinnati Reds
Abbott has had a decision in most of his 11 starts. Although he has a losing record of 3-5, he’s had quality starts in two of his last three games. He’s sporting a 3.29 ERA and 1.13 WHIP on the season. He faces a tough matchup on Monday, going to Colorado and ending the week at home against the Cubs.
