Dr. Roto’s Daily Prescription 8/16: Two More Running Backs Return to Practice

With JK Dobbins and Javonte Williams back at practice, Dr. Roto gives his take on their fantasy football outlooks.

Broncos RB Javonte Williams and Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins both returned to practice on Tuesday. This is certainly exciting news to fantasy football managers who were patiently waiting to see if they would be available for Week 1. How does their return affect the fantasy landscape?

Currently, Javonte Williams sits at an ADP of 62. He is being taken just before players like Alexander Mattison, Rachaad White and Miles Sanders. This seems to be a good spot for him, considering that when healthy, he has second-round talent. The fantasy world also loves Sean Payton and feels confident that Payton will put Williams in a position to succeed, much like he did back in the day with Alvin Kamara. I am a little worried that Samaje Perine might eat into his touches, especially in the early part of the season, but I can easily see a 55/45 split in Williams’ favor end up being closer to a 70/30 split once Williams proves he can remain healthy.

Dobbins’ current ADP is 68, which is a bit later in the sixth round. He is going right around the time when James Cook, Cam Akers and Dameon Pierce are being taken. Dobbins’ main competition for carries is Gus Edwards and, in the red zone, Lamar Jackson. For him to take the next step up as a fantasy talent, he will need to play a more significant role in the Ravens’ passing attack. I don’t see that forthcoming, however. Rookie WR Zay Flowers might see some gadget plays, while Dobbins is expected to be used primarily as a runner.

Fantasy managers will have to pay very close attention to practice reports over the coming weeks. If there is clear indication that Williams and Dobbins look 100% healthy, I can see their ADPs continuing to rise as we get closer to Opening Kickoff.
