We’ve entered the second half of August, and only a few weeks to work on improving your team towards a championship run. The problem with that, this late in the season, is that if you are behind in your ratio categories, it’s awfully difficult to gain ground.
Most teams are sitting with 1000 innings pitched; trying to pick up a pitcher to gain an extra six innings in a week seems like a fool’s errand. The same holds if you are trying to gain counting stats. If you are double digits behind in wins or 25 or more Ks behind, it’s nearly impossible to move up.
But, if you are close in any of these pitching categories, you must go for it. And, if the team you are chasing is right in front of you in any of these categories, it’s a two-point swing if you can overtake them.

Luis Ortiz-Pittsburgh Pirates: 5Ws, 71Ks, 3.41 ERA, 1.15 WHIP (facing David Peterson on Monday)
David Peterson-New York Mets: 7Ws, 56Ks, 3.04 ERA, 1.39 WHIP (Elevated WHIP but a solid ERA)
