The New York Giants could be without one of their most important offensive players for Sunday’s NFC East matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants have officially listed running back Cam Skattebo as doubtful due to a hamstring injury, putting his availability for the Week 9 contest in serious doubt.
The timing is particularly frustrating for New York, which is coming off a Week 8 bye and had an opportunity to get healthier before facing Philadelphia. Skattebo’s potential absence would leave a significant hole in the Giants’ backfield as they look to maintain their position near the top of the NFC East standings.
Skattebo misses fourth straight practice
Skattebo was unable to participate in practice throughout the week, missing all four sessions as he continued dealing with the hamstring injury. The issue dates back to New York’s Week 7 overtime victory against the Houston Texans, when he rushed for a career-high 124 yards on 17 carries.
The Giants have not officially ruled him out, but the doubtful designation indicates that he is unlikely to suit up Sunday. Head coach John Harbaugh left the door open for a potential return, saying, “Let’s see what happens” when discussing Skattebo’s status.
The running back has been a major part of New York’s offense this season. Through seven games, Skattebo has recorded 418 rushing yards on 98 carries, averaging 4.3 yards per attempt with two touchdowns. He leads the Giants in rushing yards, making his potential absence a significant concern.
Devin Singletary could take over backfield duties
If Skattebo is unable to play, veteran Devin Singletary is expected to handle the majority of the running back workload against Philadelphia. Singletary has extensive NFL experience and could be asked to carry a much larger share of the offense than usual.
The Giants are also dealing with the absence of Tyrone Tracy Jr., who was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. That leaves New York with limited options at running back heading into a critical divisional matchup.
New York enters Week 9 with a 4-2-1 record and an opportunity to strengthen its position in the NFC East. The Eagles, meanwhile, are 2-6 and looking to end a six-game losing streak.
Losing Skattebo would make an already important game more challenging for the Giants, particularly with their rushing attack playing such a significant role in the team’s success. If he cannot go, Singletary will have an opportunity to step into a much larger role on Sunday.
