Buffalo Bills running back James Cook delivered another huge performance in the NFL’s wildest Week 5 game, but his two fumbles nearly overshadowed everything else.
After Buffalo escaped the Los Angeles Rams with a 37-34 overtime victory, head coach Joe Brady made it clear that Cook’s ball-security issues must improve or his workload could be reduced.
Cook’s production came with costly mistakes
Cook finished Monday night with 25 carries for 111 yards and two touchdowns, adding seven receiving yards as Buffalo’s rushing attack helped fuel the overtime victory. However, he also fumbled twice, with his second coming on Buffalo’s first possession of overtime and resulting in a lost fumble.
That turnover nearly changed the entire outcome.
The Bills were already in position to potentially drive for the winning score when Cook lost the ball. The Rams recovered and subsequently drove into field-goal range, but Greg Rousseau blocked Harrison Mevis’ 48-yard attempt, allowing Buffalo to survive. The Bills then got the ball back and eventually won on Tyler Bass’ 45-yard field goal.
Brady acknowledged that Cook has been doing plenty of positive things, but the turnovers cannot continue.
“That can’t happen. It’s going to cost us football games — it almost cost us one,” Brady said. He added that Cook needs to improve his ball security or his carries will decrease.
Bills put Cook on notice
The warning is significant because Cook remains one of the most important pieces of Buffalo’s offense. He has now rushed for 532 yards and five touchdowns through five games, while averaging more than 100 rushing yards per game.
At the same time, Cook has already fumbled four times this season, losing two of them. That makes ball security a legitimate concern for a Bills team with Super Bowl aspirations.
Brady has continued to show confidence in Cook despite the mistakes. The coaching staff immediately put him back on the field following the overtime fumble, and Cook remained heavily involved during Buffalo’s final possession.
That trust could change if the problem persists.
Cook’s ability to produce explosive plays makes him difficult to take off the field, but Brady’s comments make clear that there are consequences for putting the football in danger. With Buffalo now preparing for a Week 6 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, Cook will have an opportunity to respond immediately.
For now, the Bills will gladly take the win. But after barely surviving Monday night, Cook knows exactly what needs to improve.
