The Philadelphia Eagles have been hit with a stunning retirement announcement just four games into the 2026 NFL season. Six-time Pro Bowl right tackle Lane Johnson announced Tuesday that he is stepping away from football after 14 seasons, ending one of the most decorated careers in franchise history.
Johnson, 36, revealed that his decision is largely centered around his mental health and spending more time with his children and family. In his retirement statement, Johnson said he wanted to play one more season with his teammates but ultimately realized his personal priorities had changed.
Johnson leaves behind an incredible Eagles legacy
Johnson was selected No. 4 overall by Philadelphia in the 2013 NFL Draft and spent his entire career with the Eagles. He became one of the most dominant offensive tackles of his generation, earning six Pro Bowl selections and multiple All-Pro honors.
More importantly, Johnson was a key part of both of Philadelphia’s Super Bowl championship teams. He helped the Eagles win Super Bowl LII during the 2017 season before playing a major role in the team’s second championship in Super Bowl LIX.
Johnson finished his Eagles career with 171 starts, establishing himself as one of the most important offensive linemen in franchise history.
His retirement had been somewhat foreshadowed. During training camp, Johnson acknowledged that the 2026 season would potentially be his final year, citing his children getting older and the health of his parents as factors in his thinking.
A difficult decision comes after personal struggles
The timing of Johnson’s announcement makes it particularly surprising. He was unexpectedly inactive for Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams because of a personal matter. He had also missed time during training camp for personal reasons.
Johnson made clear that walking away was not an easy decision.
He wrote that he had given everything to football for 14 years and wanted to take the field with his teammates for one final season. However, he ultimately decided that focusing on his mental health and family was more important.
“Philadelphia will always be home,” Johnson wrote, adding that he will “forever be an Eagle.”
