Tony Romo’s nine-year run with CBS Sports has officially come to an end. The network announced Friday that it has mutually agreed to part ways with Romo, meaning the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback will not return as CBS’ lead NFL game analyst.

The decision comes roughly two months after Romo was arrested in Wisconsin on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He had been on an indefinite leave from CBS since late July, leaving J.J. Watt to fill his role alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.

Romo’s CBS tenure officially comes to an end

CBS sportscaster and former NFL quarterback Tony Romo chats with the media Tuesday, June 27, 2023 during the OSF Children’s Hospital of Illinois Championship & Pro-Am at Metamora Fields Golf Club.

Romo joined CBS in 2017 immediately after retiring from the NFL and quickly became one of the most recognizable voices in football broadcasting. He spent all nine seasons as part of the network’s top NFL crew alongside Nantz.

CBS confirmed Friday that Watt will continue working with Nantz and Wolfson for the remainder of the 2026 NFL season. The network also said its other broadcast teams will remain unchanged.

Romo released a statement following the announcement, saying he was proud of what he accomplished during his nine years with CBS and that he plans to take a break to focus on his health and family before considering his next opportunity.

The move officially closes the door on a broadcasting partnership that became closely associated with CBS’ NFL coverage.

Decision follows July arrest and leave

Romo was arrested July 23 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, after being pulled over and accused of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He later pleaded no contest to the charge on Sept. 1. CBS had placed him on leave shortly after the arrest and previously said there was no timetable for his return.

CBS Sports president David Berson had said in August that the network was assessing the situation and considering its impact on the company’s image and brand.

The network has now made its decision.

For the remainder of the 2026 season, J.J. Watt will officially take over Romo’s position on CBS’ No. 1 NFL broadcast team, working with Nantz and Wolfson. Romo’s future in sports broadcasting remains open, but his time with CBS is over.
