Trevor Lawrence gave one of the funniest answers of NFL Week 3 after intentionally taking a knee at the 1-yard line during Jacksonville’s blowout win over the New England Patriots. With nearly nine minutes remaining, Lawrence appeared to have an easy rushing touchdown in front of him but instead went down just short of the goal line. On the very next play, Jaguars running back Bhayshul Tuten powered into the end zone.
Lawrence had a hilarious explanation
When asked afterward why he chose to kneel instead of finishing the play himself, Lawrence delivered an instant classic.
“I’m trying to help support the Bhayshul Tuten fantasy people out there.”
The joke immediately explained what happened next. Tuten was given the ball on the following play and scored from one yard out, adding another touchdown to his impressive afternoon. Tuten finished with 73 rushing yards and a touchdown as Jacksonville cruised to a 35-6 victory.
Lawrence later acknowledged that taking a knee with more than eight minutes remaining probably wasn’t the most conventional decision. He said he initially thought about keeping the clock running but looked up afterward and realized there was still plenty of time left.
Regardless of why Lawrence did it, his answer was witty, funny, and relatable, which is why it is so easy to like him.
Jaguars continue rolling behind Trevor Lawrence
The decision was hardly a problem for Jacksonville considering how comfortably the Jaguars controlled the game. Lawrence completed 19 of 29 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns, while the Jaguars scored 35 points and improved to 2-1 on the season.
The moment also highlighted the relationship between Lawrence and his teammates. Lawrence said his teammates were making fun of him afterward, while head coach Liam Coen jokingly took responsibility for the decision, saying he wanted to give someone else a touchdown.
For fantasy managers, the play may have been frustrating. For everyone else, it was one of the more entertaining moments of Week 3.
