Nick Chubb is making sure his NFL career ends exactly where it began. The longtime Cleveland Browns running back will sign a one-day contract with the franchise Friday and officially retire as a member of the organization, giving one of the most beloved players in recent Browns history the opportunity to finish his career in Cleveland.
Chubb originally announced his retirement in August after eight NFL seasons, but the latest move allows him to officially walk away from football as a Brown. It is a fitting conclusion for a player who spent seven of his eight seasons in Cleveland.
Chubb gets to retire as a Brown
The Browns announced Thursday that Chubb would return to the organization to sign the one-day contract. He is also scheduled to speak with reporters, attend practice and be honored during Cleveland’s home opener against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
Browns managing partner JW Johnson made it clear how much the organization wanted Chubb back.
“Nick epitomizes what it means to be a Brown,” Johnson said, adding that the team was honored to have him return and that he is “forever a Brown.”
Chubb’s decision to retire as a Brown is especially meaningful considering he spent the 2025 season with the Houston Texans after seven seasons in Cleveland. He was selected by the Browns with the No. 35 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and quickly became one of the most productive running backs in franchise history.
A remarkable Browns career comes to an end
Chubb finishes his Browns career with 6,843 rushing yards and 51 rushing touchdowns, ranking third in franchise history in both categories behind Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly. He also earned four consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 2019 through 2022.
His career was ultimately shaped by injuries, most notably the devastating knee injury he suffered in 2023. After undergoing extensive rehabilitation, Chubb returned to Cleveland during the 2024 season before spending his final NFL season with Houston. He finished his overall NFL career with 7,349 rushing yards, 1,109 receiving yards, and 59 total touchdowns in 100 games.
Chubb’s retirement announcement was already emotional, but getting the chance to officially retire wearing Browns colors adds another memorable chapter.
For a player who spent the majority of his career representing Cleveland, retiring as a Brown is a fitting final touch to Nick Chubb’s NFL career.
