With fewer than 10 games remaining in the MLB regular season, the National League Wild Card race has become exactly the kind of September drama baseball fans hope to see.
After Friday’s action, the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, and San Diego Padres are all sitting at 85-69, creating a three-way tie as the postseason rapidly approaches.

The Cubs and Phillies both lost Friday, allowing the Padres to pull even after San Diego defeated the Miami Marlins 8-2. The Padres have now won 11 of their last 12 games, making their late-season surge a major part of the NL playoff picture.
All three clubs enter Saturday at 85-69, so every remaining game carries significant weight. The teams aren’t simply fighting to stay alive; they’re also battling for position among the three Wild Card spots.

The Cubs currently hold the relevant tiebreaker advantages over both Philadelphia and San Diego, while the Padres’ recent surge has completely changed the race’s complexion.
Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks remain within striking distance but trail the three teams by five games with eight games remaining, leaving considerably less margin for error.
