The Baltimore Ravens received some much-needed positive news on Friday regarding star wide receiver Zay Flowers. After missing practice Wednesday and Thursday because of a hamstring injury, Flowers returned to the practice field Friday as Baltimore prepares for its Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
Flowers takes important step toward playing
Flowers’ return to practice is an encouraging development after he missed the first two sessions of the week. The Ravens had previously described the wide receiver as day-to-day after he aggravated his hamstring during Baltimore’s Week 1 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.
The injury initially appeared less serious than it could have been. Flowers was ruled out after putting together an incredible first half against Indianapolis, finishing with five receptions for 150 yards and a touchdown. He had already established himself as the focal point of Baltimore’s passing attack before leaving the game.
The timing of Friday’s practice is particularly important. With Flowers missing Wednesday and Thursday, his availability for Sunday had become a legitimate question. His return gives him a chance to continue working toward being available against New Orleans.
However, the Ravens have not yet officially confirmed that Flowers will play. His participation level Friday and the team’s final injury designation will provide more clarity before Sunday’s game.
Ravens desperately need Flowers back
Baltimore’s need for Flowers is even greater after rookie wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane was placed on injured reserve with a wrist injury. Lane will miss at least four games, leaving the Ravens with fewer options at wide receiver heading into the home opener.
Flowers’ importance was obvious in Week 1. The Ravens scored 31 points in the first half against Indianapolis, but their offense slowed considerably after Flowers and Lane left the game. Baltimore ultimately held on for a 41-23 victory.
For now, Flowers’ return to practice represents a significant step in the right direction. He still needs to get through the rest of the weekend without a setback, but Ravens fans have considerably more reason for optimism than they did after he missed the first two practices of the week.
