The Los Angeles Rams have been dealt another massive blow just days after their disappointing season opener. Star pass rusher Myles Garrett will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery and be placed on injured reserve.
This means the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year will miss at least the next four games.
Garrett’s knee issue was worse than expected
Garrett had been dealing with a knee problem throughout training camp and missed significant practice time before eventually returning for the Rams’ opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
The Rams had maintained that Garrett was ready to play, and he was listed as a full participant on the final injury report. However, his performance against San Francisco immediately raised concerns. Garrett finished the 27-7 loss without a tackle, sack, or quarterback hit and acknowledged afterward that his knee was not 100 percent.
Garrett called the performance “the worst version of myself that I’ve put out there” and said his biggest priority was getting healthy.
Now, it is clear the issue was significant enough to require surgery.
Rams lose their biggest defensive weapon
This is a devastating development for Los Angeles, particularly after the team made Garrett the centerpiece of a blockbuster offseason trade.
The Rams acquired Garrett from the Cleveland Browns in June after he had just produced an NFL-record 23 sacks in 2025 and won Defensive Player of the Year. He was expected to transform a Rams defense that reached the NFC Championship Game last season.
Instead, Los Angeles will now have to move forward without him for at least a month.
Garrett is eligible to return for Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals, meaning he is expected to miss games against the Giants, Broncos, Eagles, and Bills.
The timing is particularly brutal. The Rams already opened the season with a 27-7 loss, and now they will be without their best defensive player during a difficult portion of the schedule.
The Rams traded a massive package to acquire Myles Garrett with Super Bowl aspirations. Now, they will have to hope his knee surgery allows their biggest offseason acquisition to return quickly and finally become the player they expected.
