The NBA is wasting no time giving basketball fans a reason to tune in for the start of the 2026-27 season.
The league unveiled a sneak peek of its opening-night schedule Tuesday morning, and it features several major storylines, including a highly anticipated debut for LeBron James.
The full NBA schedule will be released Thursday, but the opening-night matchups have already given fans plenty to look forward to.
Tripleheader Opens the Season
The season will begin with the Boston Celtics visiting the Detroit Pistons in a rare 3 p.m. EDT start for a midweek game. Then comes LeBron’s 76ers debut against the NBA Champion New York Knicks at MSG.
The opening-night tripleheader will then conclude with the San Antonio Spurs hosting the Oklahoma City Thunder, giving fans a rematch of the Western Conference Finals.
All three opening-night games will be broadcast on NBC, marking an expanded television slate compared to recent years, when opening night traditionally featured two games.
LeBron’s Final Career Stop Begins in New York
The biggest storyline of opening night, however, will undoubtedly be LeBron James making his 76ers debut against the defending NBA champion New York Knicks on Oct. 20.
The matchup will take place at Madison Square Garden and will be part of the tripleheader.
The timing couldn’t be more perfect. The Knicks will raise a championship banner celebrating their first NBA championship since 1973, while James will begin what is expected to be the final stop of his legendary career.
The NBA has already delivered the headline matchups. Now fans only have to wait until Thursday to see the rest of the schedule.
